Now, they\u2019re looking for better benefits, higher salaries, hybrid\/remote work, <\/a>and better work\/life balance.<\/p>\n

This is where the hidden job market comes in, job roles that are filled through internal candidates, referrals, or recruits.<\/p>\n

Recruiters like O\u2019Donnell and Stacey Perkins argue that recruiters are no longer posting on public job boards for certain roles, as that can cost a lot of money and resources. Instead, they\u2019re reaching out directly to candidates they believe will be well suited for the role.<\/p>\n

“That’s all happening right now as part of the Great Restructuring of 2022,\u201d said O\u2019Donnell in a video shared on TikTok<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She continues, \u201cAnd people don’t realize that and get frustrated and feel bad about themselves like \u2018What’s wrong with me?\u2019 There’s nothing wrong with you. You just don’t know the new rules to career success and jobs.”<\/p>\n

How to Access the Hidden Job Market<\/h2>\n

1. Optimize your LinkedIn profile.<\/h3>\n

Many recruiters are contacting desired candidates on this social network, even if those candidates are currently not seeking new opportunities.<\/p>\n

Those who are open to new opportunities have optimized LinkedIn profiles<\/a> that allow recruiters to find them quickly.<\/p>\n

The thing is, if your profile isn\u2019t optimized for the job you\u2019re seeking, recruiters won\u2019t find you when conducting searches.<\/p>\n

Here are some tips to improve your profile:<\/p>\n

Keep your headline specific and concise \u2013 <\/strong>Don\u2019t crowd your headline with a bunch of keywords. Stick to the title that aligns with your desired role.
\n Add a descriptive bio \u2013 <\/strong>In your bio, you have the space to boast about your skills and show off your personality. Take advantage!
\n Have a profile and banner image \u2013 <\/strong>Both should be complementary and tell viewers something about you.
\n Add interesting projects to your Featured section<\/strong> \u2013 So many tools within LinkedIn are underutilized, including this one. If applicable, take a few projects from your portfolio and add them here so they\u2019re easily scannable. <\/p>\n

2. Expand your network.<\/h3>\n

When looking for a new job, often the best place to turn to is your network<\/a>.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re the ones who can refer you to jobs within the hidden market and make recommendations. If you\u2019re struggling to build your network, here are ways to get started:<\/p>\n

Attend conferences and industry events.
\n Be active on social media and engage with colleagues.
\n Join professional groups and\/or associations to build a community. E.g. \u201cBlack Marketers in Texas\u201d or \u201cNational Marketing Association\u201d <\/p>\n

3. Reach out to recruiters and companies directly.<\/h3>\n

Why wait for recruiters to find you? Instead, consider reaching out to hiring managers directly if you feel your skills would be a good fit for their team.<\/p>\n

Even if you don\u2019t see a job posting, you may have a dream company in mind. If so, don\u2019t be afraid to be proactive and reach out to them. Share your interest in the company, your skills, and how you feel you could add value to the company.<\/p>\n

Even if they don\u2019t have any openings currently, doing this will make a strong impression and may land you your next gig once they do have room.<\/p>\n

4. Subscribe to news alerts.<\/h3>\n

When you sign up for news alerts, you can stay up to date with companies, where they\u2019re headed, and when they\u2019re hiring \u2013 even if they haven\u2019t yet announced it.<\/p>\n

For instance, say a company announces they\u2019re expanding to the East Coast and will open up offices in New York. That tells you that if they haven\u2019t started already, they will soon start hiring.<\/p>\n

From there, you can reach out to the company and pitch yourself.<\/p>\n
