Gifting<\/h3>\n<p><span>Forget loyalty points \u2014 gifting is the new customer retention strategy. As remote everything continues to rise, keeping connected to clients and loved ones will be key. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span>Source: &amp;Open<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span>Gifting powerhouse 1-800-FLOWERS had a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1800flowersinc.com\/~\/media\/Files\/O\/One-800-Flowers-V4\/documents\/annual-reports\/flws-2020-annual.pdf\">record-breaking year in 2020<\/a><span>, and venture capital is flowing into startups like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/andopen.co\/\">&amp;Open<\/a><span>\u00a0(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/05\/20\/open-raises-7-2m-from-first-round-capital-and-localglobe-to-send-gifts-at-scale\/\">$7.2m<\/a><span>\u00a0last May) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tanp.jp\/company\/\">Gracia<\/a><span>\u00a0(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/gracia-japan\/company_financials\">~$14m<\/a><span>\u00a0since its 2017 launch).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Another new player, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ongoody.com\/\">Goody<\/a><span>, sent 10,000 gifts in its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/02\/08\/goody-raises-4-million-its-mobile-app-that-lets-you-send-gifts-via-text\/\">first two months<\/a><span>\u00a0and has raised <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/goody-8d4b\">$32m<\/a><span>\u00a0since its 2020 launch. Co-founder Edward Lando told <\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/02\/08\/goody-raises-4-million-its-mobile-app-that-lets-you-send-gifts-via-text\/\">TechCrunch<\/a><\/em><span>\u00a0that the app serves as an additional acquisition channel for early D2C brands and a \u201cgiant shopping mall\u201d for Gen Z consumers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Companies will also use gifting to target employees, since worker retention is at an all-time low, and the average cost of replacing an employee is about seven months of their salary. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Wellbox, for example, is a platform for businesses to send gifts to their workers that made <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/the-hustle\/the-reinvention-catering-boss-builds-a-7-figure-corporate-gifting-business\">$4m+<\/a><span>\u00a0in revenue in its first year. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>2. Direct Mail Marketing<\/h3>\n<p><span>Seth Greene, the bestselling author of seven marketing books, told Trends.co that \u201cwith all the changes in online media platforms like Google and Facebook, direct mail delivers better results than ever, with fewer restrictions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Our research backs this up, particularly when it comes to \u201cdigital interactive\u201d \u2014 physical mail used to drive readers online \u2014 where response rates are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whosmailingwhat.com\/blog\/direct-mail-trends-2021\/\">~9%-10%<\/a><span>, roughly double what they were five years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span>Source: <\/span><\/strong><\/em><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whosmailingwhat.com\/blog\/direct-mail-trends-2021\/\">25 Direct Mail Trends for 2021<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Some niches we expect will emerge in this space include:<\/p>\n<p> <strong>Voice-activated calls to action:<\/strong>\u00a0Integrating smart-speaker apps into direct mail campaigns so readers can take action with an Alexa command<br \/>\n <strong>VR integrations:<\/strong>\u00a0Physical mail that pairs with a VR headset to provide deep, interactive experiences<br \/>\n <strong>Old-school postcards:<\/strong>\u00a0Direct mail marketing companies focusing on postcards, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postcardmania.com\/\">PostcardMania<\/a>, which reportedly made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabaynewswire.com\/2022\/01\/25\/postcardmania-earnings-reach-new-highs-83-9mm-in-2021-led-by-new-marketing-automations-up-154-104943?fr=operanews\">~$84m<\/a>\u00a0in revenue last year <\/p>\n<h3>3. Return of Retro<\/h3>\n<p>The resurgence of direct mail is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the bigger trend of all things retro.<\/p>\n<p>Subscribers to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Retro\/\">r\/Retro<\/a>\u00a0subreddit have doubled to 10k+ since 2020, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/80sdesign\/\">r\/80sDesign <\/a>has hit 86k+ subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>Retro search terms are also going wild on Amazon. For example, weekly searches for \u201cretro home decor\u201d have increased 290%\u00a0in the US in the last year, according to Jungle Scout.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how we expect to see the trend manifest over the next 6 months:<\/p>\n<p> <strong>Shutter-Lovin\u2019: <\/strong>Film, old-school cameras, and darkrooms<br \/>\n <strong>Experiences: <\/strong>Roller rinks and arcades<br \/>\n <strong>Gaming: <\/strong>Old-school games and accessories<br \/>\n <strong>Advertising:<\/strong>\u00a0Brands leveraging the \u201980s aesthetic in their ads <\/p>\n<p><span>Can you tell which are from the 1980s vs. the 2020s? Audio SEO<\/h3>\n<p>The world of podcasts is growing <a href=\"https:\/\/support.sounder.fm\/article\/63-what-is-audio-seo\">faster<\/a>\u00a0than the entire internet did back in the early 2000s. Spotify alone now hosts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2022-01-09\/podcasting-hasn-t-produced-a-new-hit-in-years\">3m+ shows<\/a>\u00a0(that\u2019s ~43x the number of titles on Netflix, Disney+, and Apple TV+, combined).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span>Source: <\/span><\/strong><\/em><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.internetlivestats.com\/total-number-of-websites\/\">Internet Live Stats<\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<em><strong><span>and <\/span><\/strong><\/em><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/listening\/podcast-industry-stats\/#How_Many_Podcasts_Are_There_Right_Now\">The Podcast Host<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>But the tools that help listeners discover new content haven\u2019t kept up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/whatsnewinpublishing.com\/meet-headlinerflix-a-netflix-for-podcasts-hoping-to-solve-discoverability-problems\/\">Sixty-five<\/a>\u00a0percent of people who\u2019ve never listened to a podcast say the reason is that they don\u2019t know where to start. Meanwhile, great new shows struggle to get recognition, and audiences tire of seeing the same old suggestions.<\/p>\n<p>Audio search is due for an overhaul. Some solutions we may see emerge in the coming months include:<\/p>\n<p> <strong>Audio search engines<\/strong>, like <a href=\"https:\/\/hello.fathom.fm\/\">Fathom<\/a>, which recently raised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/fathom-4\/company_financials\">$15m<\/a>\u00a0for their AI-driven podcast player and audio search engine<br \/>\n Tools that let podcasters <strong>turn audio into snackable visual content<\/strong>\u00a0for platforms like TikTok, similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/getaudiogram.com\/\">Audiogram<\/a><br \/>\n <strong>Audio SEO tools<\/strong>, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/\">Ahrefs<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/keywordseverywhere.com\/\">Keywords Everywhere<\/a>\u00a0equivalent for audio<br \/>\n <strong>Interactive\/immersive podcast apps<\/strong>, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entale.co\/\">Entale<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorilabs.com\/\">Adori<\/a>, which allow podcasters to include relevant links, images, polls, and offer codes so that they appear on the listener\u2019s screen at the right moment <\/p>\n<h3>5. NFT-Powered Subscription Services<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/boredapeyachtclub.com\/#\/\">The Bored Ape Yacht Club<\/a> (BAYC) is one of the most popular digital art collections in the world. BAYC NFT owners have exclusive licensing and commercial rights to their apes, leveraging many token holders to build their own startups.<\/p>\n<p>One such startup is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredbreakfastclub.com\/\">Bored Breakfast Club<\/a>. It\u2019s a coffee subscription service and NFT collection that uses NFTs to establish an exclusive online community of coffee enthusiasts.<\/p>\n<p>In their subscription model, anyone who owns one of the 5k Bored Breakfast Club NFTs is entitled to receive free shipments of exclusive coffee blends.<\/p>\n<p>The NFTs also unlock access to an online community, live events, content, and discounts on additional bags of coffee.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span>Source: <\/span><\/strong><\/em><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredbreakfastclub.com\/\">Bored Breakfast Club Website<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Many big brands like <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/91956\/cameo-lethereum-nft-pass-expanded-celebrity-access\">Cameo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrangler.com\/leon-bridges-nft-collections.html\">Wrangler<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6100404\/timepieces-nft-collection\/\">Time<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6100404\/timepieces-nft-collection\/\">\u00a0magazine<\/a>\u00a0are already experimenting with NFTs for exclusive community access, but the Bored Breakfast Club is one of the first to tag on a subscription component.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s still early days, but should the model prove successful, it will open up a whole new world of potential NFT subscription products, way beyond coffee.<\/p>\n<h3>6. B2B Influencers<\/h3>\n<p>The B2B influencer space is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChrisJBakke\/status\/1399587038832168961\">underdeveloped and largely unmonetized<\/a>. While the overall influencer marketing industry was pegged at <a href=\"https:\/\/influencermarketinghub.com\/influencer-marketing-benchmark-report-2021\/\">~$9.7B<\/a>\u00a0in 2020, the bulk of that was focused on B2C campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>But that is set to change, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toprankmarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/pdf\/2020-b2b-influencer-report-final.pdf\">~80%<\/a>\u00a0of B2B brands surveyed in 2020 say they plan to either maintain or increase their influencer spend.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprising, since research from Demand Gen shows that B2B clients consider sponsored third-party or co-branded content more trustworthy than content straight from a vendor.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span>Source: <\/span><\/strong><\/em><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oktopost.com\/blog\/top-10-b2b-influencers-in-2020\/\">Oktopost<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>We expect to see a number of tools and services emerge to help brands identify and manage influencers and document their influencer strategy.<\/p>\n<p>This could take place in B2B industries where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blissfully.com\/saas-trends\/2019-annual\/\">subscription spending is highest<\/a>, such as engineering, sales, HR, and customer service.<\/p>\n<p>Influencer marketing more generally might grow stronger with each new generation. While 26% of social media users ages 25-34 have purchased a product marketed by an influencer in the past three months, 33% of social media users in the 18-24 age range have done the same.<\/p>\n<h3>7. Virtual Pop-Up Shops<\/h3>\n<p>Pop-up shops in the metaverse are a thing now.<\/p>\n<p>Italian fashion brand Hogan recently took part in Decentraland\u2019s Fashion Week with a <a href=\"https:\/\/fashionunited.com\/news\/fashion\/hogan-to-debut-virtual-store-and-nft-drop-at-metaverse-fashion-week\/2022032346690\">virtual pop-up store<\/a>, and jewelry label Pandora teamed up with Animal Planet to launch an in-game virtual pop-up called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/uk.pandora.net\/en\/pandora-me\/discover-the-collection\/visit-pandora-island\/\">Pandora Island<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new metaverse shopping industry could continue to grow with consumer interest. In a HubSpot survey of more than 1k consumers, 30% of participants said more brands should consider virtual stores in the metaverse.<\/p>\n<p>While we\u2019ll definitely see more of these, brands won\u2019t necessarily need to dive headfirst into the metaverse in order to participate in the trend.<\/p>\n<p>A virtual pop-up shop is essentially anything that creates a unique online shopping experience for your customers, separate from your existing website. This could be an event or even a landing page dedicated to a new product line.<\/p>\n<p>They first gained popularity as an alternative to the real deal during national lockdowns, and, despite a dip in 2021, interest is picking up again.<\/p>\n<p>Some big bands that have already experimented with this format include <a href=\"https:\/\/internetretailing.net\/industry\/industry\/lancome-trials-its-first-virtual-pop-up-store-in-the-uk-23785\">Lanc\u00f4me<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/hoover.com\/pages\/2021-holiday-popup\">Hoover<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/shopdunkin.com\/\">Dunkin\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span>Source: <\/span><\/strong><\/em><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shopdunkin.com\/\">Dunkin\u2019Shop<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>8. Luxe Eco-Friendly Products and Packaging<\/h3>\n<p>Conscious consumption is in vogue. Younger generations in particular are driving up demand for products like this <a href=\"https:\/\/keepyourcadence.com\/products\/the-capsule\">0.56-oz. container<\/a>\u00a0made from recycled plastic ($14) and this <a href=\"https:\/\/noho.co\/us\/products\/noho-move?color=Ironsand\">chair<\/a>\u00a0manufactured from old fishing nets ($375).<\/p>\n<p>They are also demanding more from brands, and are willing to pay to save the planet.<\/p>\n<p>While eco-friendly shampoo bars tend to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myimperfectlife.com\/features\/shampoo-bars-vs-liquid-shampoo-which-is-best-for-your-hair\">more<\/a>\u00a0cost-effective than traditional shampoo, consumers are happily splashing out for the high-end options: A single <a href=\"https:\/\/viori.com\/\">Viori<\/a>\u00a0bar costs <a href=\"https:\/\/viori.com\/collections\/all\/products\/hidden-waterfall-shampoo-bar\">$16<\/a>, ~3x the price of a comparable amount (20 oz.) of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instacart.com\/products\/17313701-dove-shampoo-daily-moisture-20-4-oz\">Dove shampoo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span>Source: <\/span><\/strong><\/em><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/subredditstats.com\/r\/zerowaste\">Subreddit Stats<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>We expect that eco-friendly packaging will also boom as the rapid rise in ecommerce continues to drive demand for sustainable packaging.<\/p>\n<p>Solutions could include compostable packaging from leftover bamboo and sugarcane pulp, like those made by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoinno.com.hk\/\">Ecoinno<\/a>, which recently raised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/ecoinno\/company_financials\">$6m<\/a>\u00a0in funding.<\/p>\n<h3>9. Gamified NFT Marketing<\/h3>\n<p>NFT platform <a href=\"https:\/\/neonapp.com\/\">Neon<\/a>\u00a0launched the world\u2019s first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/move-over-candy-bars-new-york-vending-machine-now-selling-nft-art-2022-03-02\/\">NFT vending machine<\/a>\u00a0back in February.<\/p>\n<p>The machine accepts fiat currency, making it possible for people to invest in NFTs using their credit card \u2014 without the need to convert to crypto first.<\/p>\n<p>We expect to see similar NFT marketing initiatives like arcade machines or mobile games that allow players to collect NFTs as they play.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.highsnobiety.com\/p\/louis-vuitton-nft-game\/\">Louis Vuitton<\/a>\u00a0has already released a \u201cLouis the Game\u201d mobile app, which includes 30 embedded NFTs that could only be collected by playing the game.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.complex.com\/style\/gap-launches-its-first-nft-collection\">GAP<\/a>\u00a0is another big name brand that has incorporated a gaming component into their NFT collection to encourage continued customer engagement. <\/p>\n<p><span>Source: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/neon_gallery\/status\/1496508323004391424\">Twitter<\/a><\/p>\n<p>How to Stay Up to Date<\/p>\n<p>Staying up to date on today&#8217;s trends and data can be crucial to building marketing or business strategies that meet your audiences where they are.
